A new report by marine NGO Seas At Risk highlights the economic and climate benefits of wind-assisted propulsion in global shipping. Retrofitting sails on large vessels can save nearly half a million U.S. dollars in fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions by up to 12% annually. This makes wind propulsion crucial for achieving the IMO’s emission reduction targets.
The world’s first multi-purpose vessel, Prima Verde, has been delivered with the ability to run on marine gas oil (MGO) and wind-assisted propulsion simultaneously. Equipped with environmentally friendly features like green steel materials and a wind-assisted propulsion system, the vessel aims to reduce CO2 emissions and promote sustainability in the maritime industry.
In 2024, the wind-assisted ship propulsion industry experienced significant growth, with 54 large ships operational and seven more designated as wind-ready. The International Windship Association reported a global increase in wind vessels, with an orderbook of 80 ships and more expected for 2026 and 2027. Wind propulsion is becoming popular in shipping.
