New groundbreaking technology is being used to search for a plane that went missing over Lake Superior in 1968. An autonomous surface vessel, or ASV, equipped with sonar technology, is currently being utilized by Ocean Infinity and housed at the Great Lakes Research Center in Houghton, Michigan. The ASV, named Armada 8, is designed to efficiently search below the surface of the water without the need for a human operator on board.
The ASV, at 26 feet long, is equipped with a wide array sonar system that allows it to conduct detailed surveys of the lake bottom. The vessel’s mission is to locate the remains of a Beechcraft 6580 Queen Air plane that disappeared with three souls on board in 1968. The ASV’s high-resolution sonar technology has the potential to revolutionize maritime discoveries by providing detailed images of the lake bottom, making searches more efficient and effective.
The search for the missing plane, started on September 3, is a pivotal moment in solving a decades-long Michigan mystery. If successful, the discovery could provide closure and solace to the families of the three men who were never found after the crash. The new technology and search efforts represent a significant advancement in underwater exploration and may lead to more discoveries in the Great Lakes region in the future.
