The remains of two Filipino seafarers, who tragically lost their lives in an attack in the Strait of Hormuz while on board the M/V SIDR on August 31, have been repatriated to the Philippines. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed the return of the remains on September 12, 2026. According to a report from GMA News’ Jhomer Apresto, the families of the deceased seafarers will be provided with various forms of government assistance to support them during this difficult time.
This repatriation follows the earlier return of 14 other Filipino crew members from the same vessel, who arrived back in the Philippines on September 8. The DMW is currently investigating the manning agency responsible for the two seafarers, particularly after it was revealed that one of the victims had invoked his right to refuse to sail upon learning that the ship would navigate through the dangerous waters of the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of Filipino seafarers operating in high-risk maritime zones. The government is taking steps to ensure that affected families receive the necessary support and assistance as they cope with their tragic loss.
