Recent incidents in commercial shipping, including events within the bunkering community, have led to the tragic deaths of seafarers, with others injured or reported missing. The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), through its Global Board and Secretariat, expresses profound sorrow for those affected and extends heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, friends, and colleagues. These occurrences highlight the ongoing plight of innocent seafarers who bear the brunt of geopolitical conflicts, serving as civilians essential to the global economy and deserving of protection from violence.
IBIA condemns attacks on commercial shipping and stands in solidarity with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the maritime community, advocating for enhanced protection of seafarers and an immediate cessation of assaults on merchant vessels. The organization calls upon governments and the international community to take decisive measures to prevent further loss of life, ensure freedom of navigation, protect global trade, and uphold international law.
Alexander Prokopakis, Executive Director of IBIA, emphasized that seafarers often become overlooked victims in geopolitical disputes. He echoed the sentiments of IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, asserting that attacks on innocent seafarers and civilian shipping are intolerable. Seafarers play a crucial role in delivering essential goods and services, and they deserve respect, protection, and the ability to perform their duties without fear of becoming targets.
