A Greek-owned bulker named the Zografia collided with a moored vessel, the Princesse Jessica, at the port of Dakar, Senegal, causing the latter to capsize and sink at the pier. The incident, which occurred on October 15, is currently under investigation by the local port authority. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, and the port activities are said to be continuing as usual. The authorities are working on refloating the Princesse Jessica promptly to minimize any impacts on port operations.
The Zografia had previously survived a Houthi missile attack in January while transiting the Red Sea. The missile penetrated the vessel’s hull but luckily caused no injuries as the bulker was in ballast condition at the time. The damage was repaired at Suez Shipyard, and the vessel continued its operations. Despite this earlier incident, the Zografia was involved in the recent collision at the port of Dakar, adding to its eventful history.
The Port Autonome de Dakar emphasized the robust operational system in place and assured that they are working closely with relevant administrations to respond effectively to the situation. They stated that such accidents can happen in any port and that the incident has not disrupted port activities. The agency is focused on refloating the sunken vessel and minimizing any potential disruptions to port operations.
