Terra Nova Expeditions has announced a significant change to its inaugural expedition cruise season in Antarctica, as it must replace the historic liner St. Helena due to logistical challenges. Originally built in 1990, St. Helena served as a vital link for the remote island of the same name until her retirement in 2018, following the introduction of air service. Despite her retirement, the ship found new life as a transport vessel for the racing group Extreme E after undergoing extensive renovations.
The company had planned to use St. Helena for Antarctic voyages starting in December 2026, but it is currently unable to reposition from the Persian Gulf due to ongoing regional instability. Consequently, Terra Nova Expeditions has decided to abandon plans for the St. Helena and has secured a replacement vessel, which will be renamed Terra Nova Adventurer. This ship has a rich history as well, previously operating as a passenger ferry and later as an expedition cruise ship for G Adventures.
Terra Nova Adventurer will undergo enhancements before its first season, including updates to onboard amenities and decor. The company aims to combine the vessel’s established expedition credentials with a refreshed experience tailored to small-ship polar travel. Terra Nova Expeditions has confirmed that its planned Antarctic itineraries will proceed as scheduled, with the ship chartered through the 2028/29 season, while the future of St. Helena remains uncertain.
