On Tuesday, the captain and two crew members of a passenger ferry in Guyana that capsized were charged with murder, following a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of 73 individuals and left 30 others missing. The ferry, known as the Barima, sank on July 18 while en route from Georgetown, the capital, to the village of Port Kaituma in the northwest.
Captain Kevin Price, aged 40, along with crew members Rondell Dwayne Roberts, 42, and Delon Granderson, 33, appeared in a Georgetown court to face the serious charges. According to police reports, the defendants were not required to enter any pleas during the court session.
Following their arraignment, the three men were remanded to prison custody, and the case has been scheduled for adjournment on August 3. The Barima, an 87-year-old vessel, had been a critical means of transportation before the disastrous event.
