ClassNK Approves Mitsubishi’s Ammonia Fuel Supply

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has received Approval in Principle from ClassNK for its ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS) developed for the X-DF-A engine by WinGD. This milestone aligns with the IMO's goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry by 2050. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the Japanese classification society ClassNK for its ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS) designed for the X-DF-A engine developed by WinGD. This development follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and WinGD in June 2023 to work on joint technical studies for an AFSS to support the International Maritime Organization’s goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry by 2050.

In February 2024, the basic design for the AFSS for the X-DF-A engine was finalized as a result of the joint studies, leading to the acquisition of AiP for the system along with approval for a new ammonia gas abatement system (AGAS). Mitsubishi Shipbuilding plans to continue collaborating with WinGD to commercialize the AFSS and contribute to reducing GHG emissions in the maritime sector by utilizing ammonia as a clean fuel source that emits no CO2 when combusted.

Moving forward, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will focus on developing marine ammonia handling systems, including fuel supply systems for ammonia combustion systems for various engines, as well as ammonia gas abatement systems. The company aims to promote decarbonization in the maritime industry by offering design and engineering solutions for ammonia-fueled ships and onboard plants equipped with multiple ammonia-fueled combustion systems such as main engines, power generation engines, and boilers.
