Swiss marine propulsion company WinGD, Swedish marine technology leader Alfa Laval, and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) have teamed up with Korean shipbuilder K Shipbuilding (KSB) to develop an ammonia-powered MR tanker design. The collaboration involves incorporating a 6X52DF-A engine from WinGD, with WinGD providing fuel gas system specifications, Alfa Laval handling the detailed documentation for the fuel gas system design, and ABS reviewing the design for approval.
Sebastian Hensel, Vice President of Research and Development at WinGD, expressed optimism about the growing interest in ammonia-fueled tankers and highlighted the important role of their XDF-A engines in such projects. Viktor Friberg, Head of Marine Separation & Fuel Supply Systems at Alfa Laval, emphasized the significance of partnerships in achieving decarbonization goals and supporting the fuel switch to ammonia within the shipping industry.
The X52DF-A engine, the smallest bore size in WinGD’s ammonia-fueled X-DF-A series, has already been ordered for two ammonia carriers set for delivery in 2026. Several classification societies, including ABS, have granted in-principle approvals for the X-DF-A series, offering shipowners confidence in the engine’s safety. WinGD’s focus on industry partnerships and collaborations, such as this joint effort with Alfa Laval, ABS, and KSB, aims to advance ammonia engine development and ensure safe operation within the marine industry.
