Captain Ivan Srzentić from the Professional Seafarers’ Union of Jadrolinija expressed his concerns regarding the tragic accident that occurred in Mali Losinj, resulting in the deaths of three seamen after the ramp of the ferry “Lastovo” collapsed. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, offered condolences to the victims’ families and promised a thorough investigation. However, Srzentić criticized the minister’s response as vague and lacking accountability, calling for the removal of the President of the Management board, David Sopta.

Srzentić highlighted the need for support for the surviving sailors who will require assistance following the incident. He expressed disappointment in the current leadership’s handling of longstanding issues within the organization, emphasizing the importance of holding responsible parties accountable. Two investigations are currently underway, one by police and state prosecutors, and the other by the Agency for Investigating Air, Sea, and Rail Traffic Accidents.

Secretary General at the Seafarers’ Union of Croatia, Neven Melvan, expressed concern over the potential delays in the investigation and the possibility of shifting blame onto the sailors. Minister Butković defended the government’s efforts to modernize the Jadrolinija fleet, citing the procurement of new vessels to improve safety. Despite ongoing procedures, the Minister emphasized the commitment to enhancing maritime operations for the future.
