Burckhardt Compression has secured a deal to supply LNG boil-off gas compressors for Hanwha Ocean’s eight-vessel newbuilding order. Hanwha Ocean, formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, is incorporating compact LNG boil-off gas compressors into the low-pressure, two-stroke engines of their LNG carriers. This move is part of Hanwha’s utilization of its patented partial reliquefaction system, a crucial component of the vessels’ propulsion technology. By choosing compressors from Burckhardt Compression, Hanwha aims to leverage the company’s expertise in the marine sector and its ability to provide tailored and efficient systems.
The compressors from Burckhardt Compression are designed to elevate LNG boil-off gas to a pressure of 150 bar, featuring dry-running cylinders across all stages for a compact system suitable for marine applications with limited space. The company has customized these compressors to seamlessly integrate with Hanwha’s patented system, ensuring a harmonious fit for the LNG carriers. This order marks Burckhardt Compression’s expansion into the LNG shipbuilding market, catering to the increasing demands within the sector. Fabrice Billard, CEO of Burckhardt Compression, emphasized the company’s commitment to driving sustainable practices in the marine industry through this collaboration.
By partnering with Burckhardt Compression for LNG boil-off gas handling compressors, Hanwha Ocean is taking a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of its LNG carriers. The decision to incorporate these compressors into the vessels’ propulsion systems underscores Hanwha’s dedication to leveraging innovative technologies for optimal performance. This strategic move aligns with the broader industry trend towards adopting environmentally friendly solutions in maritime operations, positioning both companies as key players in advancing sustainable practices within the LNG sector.
