Firefighting efforts continue to control a blaze on the ro/ro freighter Blue Carrier 2, which has been relocated from Mykonos to a safer area southwest of Tinos, shielded from strong winds. Despite these efforts, local reports indicate that the fire is still active, potentially exacerbated by a cargo of chemicals onboard. According to AIS data, multiple tugs and support vessels remain on-site to assist with cooling operations as the fire persists.
The extent of the fire damage suggests that Blue Carrier 2 may be a total loss. Current operations are focused on maintaining the vessel’s stability, as it has developed a slight list. Video footage indicates that the fire has spread significantly, affecting the superstructure and wheelhouse.
The Hellenic Coast Guard has initiated a preliminary investigation into the fire’s cause, with early indications pointing to a truck in the vehicle bay that may have ignited due to an electrical fault. Meanwhile, officials from Samos are coordinating with Greece’s shipping ministry to secure alternative delivery methods for urgent cargo, with the ferry Blue Carrier 1 adding a stop in Samos to accommodate these needs.
The fire erupted on Friday while the ship was en route from Syros to Samos, carrying 166 trucks and 29 cars. Following initial firefighting attempts, the crew abandoned the vessel, and all 28 crew members, along with one truck driver, were safely evacuated without injuries. Built in 1997 and measuring 530 feet, Blue Carrier 2 was recently acquired by Greece’s Attica Ferries.
