Qatari mediators are set to engage in separate discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in New York as well as with U.S. representatives early next week in an effort to resolve ongoing conflicts. These talks aim to build on an amended seven-day proposal presented by Iran during last week’s United Nations General Assembly. Araqchi remains in New York post-GA and is expected to facilitate talks concerning the latest proposals and the current situation.
Iran’s state media has confirmed Araqchi’s meetings with the mediators, but uncertainties remain regarding the U.S. representatives who will participate. The spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry later clarified that Araqchi’s schedule to return to Tehran has not changed, and no additional details about the negotiations were provided.
Iran’s proposed plan seeks to halt hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, unfreeze Iranian assets, lift sanctions on Iranian oil, and end the blockade on Iranian ports. This would allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and facilitate resumed discussions on Iran’s nuclear program. While U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly dismissed the proposal, he mentioned the possibility of future negotiations.
Araqchi indicated that Iran is awaiting a formal response from the U.S. regarding the proposal, emphasizing that any movement toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz is contingent upon specific conditions being met. He asserted that a negotiated resolution is crucial to end the current deadlock.
