Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a part of the technology group Wärtsilä, has introduced a groundbreaking Ammonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS) for ships that can operate using ammonia fuel in both liquid and gaseous forms. Ammonia is considered a promising new fuel candidate for the shipping industry due to its potential for reducing CO2 emissions, sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, and particulate matter (PM) emissions.
The AFSS developed by Wärtsilä Gas Solutions is designed to be innovative and reliable, enabling the use of ammonia as a marine fuel. With over 50 years of experience in handling ammonia onboard ships, Wärtsilä is confident in the robustness and reliability of the system, even under challenging sea conditions. The AFSS is seen as a key enabler for decarbonized operations in the shipping industry.
The AFSS can be installed on newbuild ships or retrofitted onto existing vessels, serving as an integrated cargo handling and fuel supply system for ships carrying liquefied gas or as a standalone fuel supply system for vessels with low or high-pressure systems. The system includes pumps, heat exchangers, and proven components to ensure a stable and reliable fuel flow at the correct pressure and temperature, with proper filtering to maintain fuel cleanliness. The first installations of the Wärtsilä Ammonia Fuel Supply Systems will be on two new gas carriers being built in Korea for Exmar LPG, making them the first oceangoing vessels capable of operating with ammonia fuel.
