Wärtsilä, a technology group, has received an order to supply its latest simulator technology for a new maritime training centre in Finland. The order was placed by the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) and the Joint Authority of Education of Kotka-Hamina Region (Ekami), and the simulator will be installed in Xamk’s new campus in Kotka, Finland. The simulator will feature Wärtsilä’s Navi-Trainer professional and Techsim simulation software, as well as the latest Navi Sailor and NACOS Platinum bridge systems, providing a realistic training environment for students.

The training centre will have full mission navigational bridges with 360-degree visualization, digital chart tables, and engine room simulators with touchscreen technology. Olli-Pekka Brunila, Director of Education at Xamk, emphasized the importance of the advanced simulator technology in preparing students for maritime tasks, while Ola Lundqvist, Product Sales Manager at Wärtsilä, highlighted the system’s role in providing students with realistic operational experience. Additionally, the training centre will have instructor and debriefing rooms, as well as a dedicated command centre for various training applications.

The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery in August 2024, and Xamk is an existing customer of Wärtsilä, having used another training simulator for more than 20 years. Hannu Mäntymaa, Vice President for Voyage Services at Wärtsilä, emphasized the importance of continuous training programs for maritime organizations, particularly in the context of decarbonization and the need for highly competent crews.
