A deceased Dutch ornithologist has been identified as the initial case of a hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. Despite local opposition, the vessel has successfully docked in Tenerife, allowing all passengers to disembark and return to their home countries for medical evaluation.
In an effort to alleviate public concern and anger regarding the outbreak, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited the Canary Islands. He reassured the public that, while the outbreak is associated with the Andes strain of the hantavirus—known for its potential human-to-human transmission—there is no imminent risk of a new pandemic.
DW correspondent Nicole Ris in Madrid and molecular biologist Kai Kupferschmidt provide further insights into the situation. Their expertise sheds light on the virus’s transmission dynamics and the ongoing response to the outbreak, aiming to keep the public informed and calm during this health scare.
