A family aboard a Carnival Cruise Line recently made headlines after they claimed they had to abandon their trip due to the cruise line’s unexpected restrictions. Heather Farley, a TikTok user known as @heathere13_, shared that she and her family were not allowed to bring their eco-friendly “poop sponge,” or xylospongium, on board. According to her now-deleted video, the crew confiscated this ancient Roman hygiene tool, leading them to turn back from the cruise.
In her video, Farley expressed frustration over Carnival’s hygiene policies, stating they had to return home because the cruise line would not permit the xylospongium, which her family had been using as an eco-friendly alternative to toilet paper. She emphasized their commitment to sustainability, showcasing a photo of their sponge attached to a stick. While the xylospongium has historical significance, its cleanliness has raised concerns, especially given the potential for spreading bacteria and viruses on cruise ships.
Carnival’s policies allow passengers to bring personal care products without size restrictions, but the specifics about items like the xylospongium remain unclear. Many viewers reacted negatively to Farley’s story, suggesting that such an item should not be allowed on a cruise. Despite the historical context, the modern interpretation of hygiene practices has led to widespread skepticism about using such tools today.
