In a significant development for India’s maritime industry, the M.V. Sindhu has made history as the first Indian-flagged vessel to be commanded by both a female Master and a female Pilot. Under the leadership of Captain Meera Uppadhaya and Pilot Ms. Reshma Nilofer Visalakshi, the ship set sail from Khidderpore Docks in Kolkata on April 21, 2026, heading towards Port Blair. This voyage symbolizes a crucial step toward gender equality in maritime leadership.
This groundbreaking achievement reflects the changing dynamics of India’s shipping sector, where women are increasingly assuming pivotal roles that were once male-dominated. The successful coordination and professionalism displayed during the vessel’s departure highlight the high standards of training and competence among female maritime professionals in India.
The event has garnered widespread recognition as a testament to the ongoing efforts of maritime institutions, training academies, and regulatory bodies to promote diversity and inclusivity at sea. It aligns with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ vision for an equitable maritime ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of empowering women in this field.
Industry stakeholders view this voyage as a powerful symbol of empowerment, encouraging aspiring seafarers nationwide.
