Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has made a significant leap in India’s green shipbuilding sector by securing a Category 4 order from Energy ONE Limited. This order entails the construction of four 92,500 DWT dual-fuel ammonia bulk carriers, marking a first for India. These vessels will be the largest commercial ships constructed at an Indian shipyard, showcasing advancements in both technology and scale within the domestic industry.
Each vessel will measure 229.5 meters in length and 37 meters in beam, featuring an ammonia-fueled propulsion system designed by KMS-EMEC from South Korea and classified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The first ship is slated for delivery in October 2029, with subsequent vessels to follow every four months.
Energy ONE Limited, a partner in the New Energy One (NEO) investment fund, is dedicated to financing green assets. With a $2 billion capital investment program aimed at zero-emission ships, NEO is working to help industrial users reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, NEO has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sagarmala Finance Corp Ltd to co-invest in green shipping initiatives.
