On April 5, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated National Maritime Day, emphasizing India’s rich maritime heritage and the significant contributions of individuals in this sector. He stated that their commitment enhances the nation’s economy, trade, and connectivity. In a post on X, Modi expressed the government’s dedication to leveraging the maritime sector’s potential for a prosperous future.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal echoed this sentiment, asserting that India is on track to become one of the top five global maritime powers. He praised the NMDCC Delhi Chapter and DG Shipping for organizing an Inter-MTI Sports Meet and blood donation drives to mark the occasion. Sonowal highlighted the dedication of cadets, reflecting the spirit of “Maritime India – Empowering Progress,” and noted the sector’s rapid transformation under Modi’s vision.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways also honored seafarers, particularly those facing challenging conditions in West Asia. They acknowledged the resilience and service of these individuals, affirming their commitment to ensuring their well-being. National Maritime Day celebrates the historic 1919 voyage of the SS Loyalty, the first Indian ship to sail from Mumbai to London, marking a pivotal moment in India’s maritime trade journey.
