Offshore platforms are a hazard for migratory birds attracted by their lights, which can lead to exhaustion and death. To address this issue, Glamox has introduced new bird-friendly lights that use green LED technology. These lights provide sufficient illumination for offshore workers and mariners while being less attractive to migratory birds. By using these marine-certified lights, offshore structures can help preserve darker skies, protect migratory birds, and reduce cleaning and maintenance costs.
The innovative green LED lights are designed to reduce the impact on migratory birds’ magnetic orientation. Oskar Mile, the lighting designer leading the project at Glamox, explains that the green color of the light is less appealing to birds. Additionally, the lights can be controlled to dim or switch off when not needed, further minimizing their impact on wildlife. The goal is to ensure the safety of offshore workers while also protecting migratory birds.
Glamox offers bird-friendly versions of its popular MIR G2 linear LED luminaires and MAX G2 explosion-proof luminaires for offshore platforms, wind turbines, and vessels. LED Kits are available for customers to upgrade their existing luminaires to be bird-friendly. The company also provides dark sky-approved marine-certified luminaires and LED Kits that minimize glare and light spillage. By using these bird-friendly lighting solutions, offshore structures can maintain safety for workers and protect migratory birds simultaneously.
