Gibraltar is showcasing its success in combating drug smuggling with the use of newly acquired underwater drones. HM Customs recently conducted a significant drug bust involving the Chinese-owned bulker, Great Zhou, which docked in Gibraltar on April 30 for refueling after traveling from Santos, Brazil. During a routine inspection, the drones revealed suspicious activity around the vessel’s sea chest.
Upon investigation, divers recovered four packages containing a total of 120 kg of cocaine hidden in the sea chest. Following the bust, HM Customs detained the ship and questioned the crew, although they were later allowed to continue their journey to Italy. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo praised HM Customs for their effective operation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to investing in resources to combat drug-related crime.
Officials believe the crew was unaware of the drugs’ presence and that the shipment was intended for another European destination. This operation underscores Gibraltar’s proactive measures in disrupting smuggling activities and highlights the effectiveness of advanced technology in law enforcement efforts.
