Spanish authorities recently intercepted a vessel in the Atlantic Ocean, seizing the largest cocaine shipment in the country’s history, estimated at 35 to 40 tonnes. The operation, executed by the Civil Guard on May 1, took place in international waters near the Canary Islands. Approximately 20 individuals aboard the ship were arrested, as confirmed by the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC). Officials reported that the ship’s hold was completely packed with bales of cocaine, marking this seizure as historic due to its unprecedented volume.

The vessel had departed from Freetown and was en route to Benghazi; however, authorities suspect that the cargo was not intended for direct unloading in Libya. It is believed the shipment was meant to be transferred to smaller boats for distribution across Europe, a method typically orchestrated by organized international trafficking networks. Spain’s Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, emphasized the significance of the seizure, noting its status as one of the largest not only in Spain but globally.

The investigation remains under legal secrecy following a court order, and specific details about the operation have not been officially disclosed. Spain serves as a primary entry point for drugs into Europe, owing to its strategic location and connections with Latin America. In recent years, authorities have successfully executed several large drug seizures, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat trafficking in the region.
