Union Maritime’s LNG Tankers Receive Regulatory Approval
Union Maritime and BAR Technologies have announced that their proposals for bridge visibility, navigational lights, and radar line of sight for two new LNG dual-fueled tankers, featuring WindWings wind-assisted propulsion systems, have received formal approval from the Marshall Islands flag after a review by Lloyd’s Register. This milestone marks a significant step in integrating advanced propulsion technology into maritime operations.
The LR2 tankers, constructed by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and scheduled for delivery in early 2026, are the first LNG dual-fuel vessels to achieve SOLAS approval for navigational compliance. This development highlights the potential for incorporating efficient technologies into new vessel designs without compromising safety or regulatory standards.
Lukasz Brzoska from BAR Technologies emphasized that this approval illustrates the rapid progress in regulatory compliance and WindWings technology adoption. Union Maritime’s managing director, Laurent Cadji, noted that this integration represents a pivotal moment in demonstrating the commercial viability of sustainable solutions aimed at decarbonizing the maritime industry.
David Wamsley from the Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator praised the collaboration with Lloyd’s Register in ensuring compliance with SOLAS while accommodating innovative technologies. The operational success of Union Maritime’s Brands Hatch, the first tanker equipped with WindWings, reinforces the effectiveness of these systems in enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions.
