The Strait of Hormuz is open to all shipping except vessels associated with “Iran’s enemies,” as stated by Iran’s representative to the U.N. maritime agency, according to recent Iranian media reports. Ali Mousavi’s remarks followed an interview with the Chinese news agency Xinhua, prior to U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning to target Iranian facilities if the strait wasn’t “fully open” within 48 hours.

Concerns over Iranian actions amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict have deterred many ships from navigating through this vital corridor, which accounts for approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Such disruptions could pose a significant risk to global energy stability.

Mousavi, who also serves as Iran’s ambassador to the UK, emphasized Tehran’s commitment to collaborating with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to enhance maritime safety in the Gulf. He mentioned that vessels not affiliated with “Iran’s enemies” could navigate the strait by coordinating security measures with Iranian authorities.

He reiterated that Iran prioritizes diplomacy, urging the importance of ending hostilities and fostering mutual trust as essential conditions for stability in the region. Mousavi attributed the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz to ongoing Israeli and U.S. actions against Iran.
