The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has released findings on a tow rope incident involving the tug Svitzer Avon on February 4, 2025. The tugs Svitzer Avon and Svitzer Brunel were assisting the car carrier Auto Eco as it approached Royal Portbury Dock. During the operation, Svitzer Avon’s relief master, who had limited experience with the tug, was supervising the mate at the controls.
At 2003, while positioned behind Auto Eco, Svitzer Avon passed a towline to the car carrier. However, the tow rope parted shortly after due to an over-correction during maneuvering, resulting in the rope recoiling and shattering the wheelhouse windows, causing minor injuries to the master and mate. The crew quickly adapted to complete the operation, and both were later treated at a hospital.
The investigation revealed that the relief master was not authorized for supervision, and the towage company lacked a defined training regime. The tow rope had previously failed after extensive use, highlighting inadequate risk management practices. In response, Svitzer Marine Limited has implemented standardized training, reviewed incidents, and improved rope selection protocols to enhance safety measures.
