Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and global marine services provider Svitzer have initiated the construction of four advanced battery-electric tugs, marking a significant advancement in green maritime technology. The steel-cutting ceremony at Cochin Shipyard follows a shipbuilding agreement signed in December 2025 for the next-generation TRAnsverse 2600e tugs, highlighting Svitzer’s investment in the Indian maritime sector.
This collaboration aligns with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and “Make in India” initiative, emphasizing the development of domestic capabilities in electric propulsion and sophisticated vessel construction. Attendances at the ceremony included CSL’s Chairman, Jose V. J., and senior Svitzer leadership, showcasing a strong partnership aimed at advancing decarbonization in the maritime industry.
The TRAnsverse 2600e tugs are designed for demanding harbor operations, boasting battery-electric propulsion that supports zero direct emissions when powered by green sources. Svitzer’s COO, Kasper Karlsen, noted that the tugs would enhance operational efficiency and productivity at ports without necessitating additional infrastructure.
The project underscores the Government of India’s commitment to strengthening the domestic shipbuilding industry, backed by substantial financial investments to revitalize the sector and enhance maritime capabilities across the nation.
