An Indian-flagged dhow sank off the coast of Oman due to a mechanical failure, but all 14 crew members were successfully rescued. The Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed that the crew is safe and in good health, and they have been transferred to the MV Jabal Ali, a cargo vessel heading to Mumbai.
The rescue operation, which involved the Indian-flagged MSV Virat 1, concluded successfully, with all crew members now aboard the Jabal Ali 9. The embassy reported that the vessel experienced engine failure, prompting the crew to transfer to a life raft before being rescued by nearby ships, coordinated by Omani authorities.
This incident occurs amid rising tensions in the region, particularly concerning attacks on merchant vessels. Recently, three vessels with Indian crew members were reportedly targeted, resulting in the tragic deaths of three seafarers. In response, India has expressed its concerns to the U.S. regarding military strikes on commercial vessels, deeming them “unacceptable” and detrimental to maritime safety and stability.
The situation highlights the ongoing risks faced by maritime operations in the region, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures for commercial shipping.
