The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has released an interim report regarding the breakaway of four ships during a severe storm at the Port of Brisbane on November 24, 2025. The storm caused three large container ships to break their moorings, with one grounding, while a car carrier, the Viking Passama, was pushed off its berth but remained under tug control.

The report outlines the events leading up to the incident, noting that the Brisbane harbour master received weather briefings about potential severe thunderstorms earlier that day. Despite warnings, operations continued as normal until a severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 12:43 PM. As winds rapidly increased, the Viking Passama, assisted by tugs, struggled to maintain its berth. Ultimately, it drifted into the channel but was brought back under control after the wind subsided.

The container ships Volans and Wide India also broke free, with the former requesting urgent assistance that was unavailable. MSC Barbara lost propulsion and grounded shortly thereafter. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, though minor damage was reported. The ATSB continues its investigation, with a final report expected to detail analysis and findings.
