Safety officials in the UK are looking into the death of a rig worker aboard the Valaris 121 in the North Sea. The individual, identified as 32-year-old Lee Hulse, reportedly fell from a crane. Police Scotland confirmed they received a report of the incident around 4:40 AM on November 14, stating that the death is not being considered suspicious.
Valaris, the operator of the rig, acknowledged the incident and expressed condolences, stating that Hulse’s next of kin has been informed and support is being offered during this challenging time. Shell, which manages the platform where the Valaris 121 was operating, also extended its sympathies to Hulse’s family, emphasizing their commitment to providing assistance to Valaris following the incident.
No other crew members were injured, and Valaris has temporarily suspended operations on the rig. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Hulse’s family, highlighting his dedication to caring for loved ones and ensuring his daughter is looked after.
This incident marks the second fatality aboard the Valaris 121 in two years. In January 2023, a worker went missing while the rig was being towed, with an investigation into safety risks ongoing. The Valaris 121, built in 2014, is a high-capacity jackup rig capable of drilling to significant depths.
