Hours after U.S. President Donald Trump initially denied extending the ceasefire with Iran, he announced its continuation, while waiting for a “unified proposal” from Tehran. In a Tuesday CNBC interview, Trump had emphasized the U.S.’s strong negotiating position, stating, “I don’t want to do that. We don’t have that much time.” However, he later confirmed the ceasefire extension would remain until Iran proposes a consolidated deal, despite maintaining the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz.
The ceasefire extension coincides with ongoing uncertainties around peace talks, following news that senior U.S. official JD Vance would not be attending upcoming discussions. Meanwhile, initial reactions from Tehran indicated skepticism regarding Trump’s announcement, with some Iranian officials suggesting no request had been made for a ceasefire extension.
Additionally, Trump renewed threats of military action, stating he expects to resume bombing if a deal is not reached. A spokesperson for Iran’s parliament suggested Trump’s remarks lack significance and may be a strategic maneuver.
