On March 7, 2025, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) launched the “Women at Sea” website, aimed at enhancing the roles of women in the maritime industry. Developed by ITF affiliates, the platform seeks to establish a global network for women seafarers, emphasizing the importance of joining ITF-affiliated trade unions for broader support.
During a panel discussion, professionals from the industry, including active female seafarers, shared insights on how to foster inclusivity within the maritime sector. Chief engineer and fleet manager Elisza Chomi highlighted the necessity of adapting to emerging challenges such as green technology and larger vessels, along with the importance of continuous learning.
Maersk representatives discussed ongoing efforts to address issues affecting women at sea, including the need for gender-appropriate protective equipment, improved vessel design, and training on respectful interactions in challenging situations. The session was chaired by ITF maritime coordinator Jacqueline Smith and included contributions from International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez.
Additionally, the maritime sector launched a helpline, providing female seafarers with access to a trusted, female-led support system, available 24/7 through the Sailors’ Society for confidential assistance.
