The shipping industry is undergoing a significant transformation with the integration of autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. However, a critical concern remains regarding how these technological advancements impact the safety and well-being of seafarers. The Nautical Institute, in partnership with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, has launched the Seafarer Technology Engagement, Empowerment and Resilience (STEER) project. This initiative aims to examine the real-world implications of new technologies and practices at sea, focusing on their effects on seafarers’ operational efficiency and mental and physical health.

Captain David Patraiko, Director of Projects at The Nautical Institute, emphasized the importance of considering seafarers’ experiences amidst the rush for innovation. The STEER Project seeks to gather insights from those directly involved in maritime operations, enabling the development of tools that enhance decision-making and improve the working environment. Both The Nautical Institute and Lloyd’s Register Foundation are committed to ensuring that technological advancements do not compromise the welfare of maritime professionals.
