Enova, a Norwegian state-owned agency focused on innovation in the energy sector, has awarded Nrk1.2Bn (US$112.7M) in grants to support the commercialization of 15 hydrogen- and ammonia-fueled ships. This funding, the largest ever given in one round by Enova, aims to accelerate the transition to zero-carbon fuels in the shipping industry. The announcement of the grants was made at the DNV/Green Shipping Programme, with Norway’s Climate and Environment Minister, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, highlighting the importance of the allocation in supporting the country’s climate targets.
Under the Hydrogen for Ships program, Nrk780M (US$56.2M) in grants will be used to develop and construct nine hydrogen-powered commercial vessels. Maris Fiducia Norway AS is one of the recipients, receiving funding to operate five hydrogen-powered dry bulk vessels for a zero-emissions service. The vessels will incorporate a dual-fuel hydrogen internal combustion engine and fuel cells, showcasing hydrogen technologies for shipping and proving their feasibility. Dutch naval architectural firm Ankerbeer is designing the vessels, with plans to increase the capacity of the hydrogen energy systems in the future.
One of the most high-profile projects receiving funding is Høegh Autoliners’ Aurora-class car carrier newbuilding program, which will incorporate ammonia-fueled engines. With support from Enova, Høegh Autoliners aims to demonstrate the viability of clean ammonia as a zero-carbon shipping fuel. The company believes it is crucial for shipping companies to lead the way in adopting carbon-neutral fuels and sending a clear signal to the industry. Plans for the construction of ammonia-fueled ships and the development of infrastructure for green hydrogen and ammonia as fuels are underway, signaling a significant step towards decarbonizing the shipping industry in Norway.
