Kongsberg Maritime has introduced two larger models to its Rim-Drive Tunnel Thruster lineup, aimed at vessels that require increased thrust and improved dynamic positioning capabilities. The new RD-TT 2300 and RD-TT 2600 models feature propeller diameters of 2,300 mm and 2,600 mm, respectively, and are rated at 2,100 kW and 2,700 kW. These additions enhance the upper range of Kongsberg’s existing offerings and are intended for applications in offshore construction, subsea operations, renewable energy projects, as well as for passenger, research, and specialized vessels.
The innovative Rim-Drive design integrates a permanent-magnet electric motor directly into the propeller rim, which eliminates the need for a gearbox and vertical drive shaft. This design approach not only reduces mechanical complexity and maintenance needs but also minimizes underwater radiated noise while enhancing overall efficiency.
Per Håvard Siljan Hjukse, Kongsberg Maritime’s executive vice president of Propulsion & Handling, stated that the industry is increasingly looking for high-performance solutions that do not compromise on efficiency, reliability, or environmental impact. The new RD-TT models respond to market demand for larger, more powerful thrusters optimized for contemporary dynamic positioning operations.
Kongsberg’s established Rim-Drive technology has already shown significant benefits in terms of efficiency, noise reduction, and operational performance. The introduction of these new models further enhances the company’s offerings and presents opportunities for a broader range of offshore vessels to leverage this advanced technology.
