Mecklenburger Metallguss (MMG) is set to showcase a massive ship propeller at the Hamburg exhibition grounds, marking the lead-up to SMM 2026, scheduled for September 1-4. Weighing approximately 35.5 tons and measuring 7.8 meters in diameter, the propeller, crafted from bronze, will be prominently displayed at the Central Entrance, symbolizing maritime engineering excellence.
Originally designed for the 4,300-TEU container ship KMTC Nhava Sheva, operated by Korea Marine Transport Co. Ltd., the propeller was not intended as an exhibition piece. Instead, it will replace the ship’s original propeller, built in 2008, following its display at SMM. The new design, optimized using computational fluid dynamics, is expected to enhance the vessel’s efficiency by 5-7%, with an additional 2% fuel savings anticipated from MMG’s ESCAP fin cap.
The installation of the propeller will take place on August 27, 2026, with media invited to capture the event. MMG has a longstanding tradition of presenting large-scale propellers at SMM, dating back to 2004. The propeller will be transported to Hamburg via heavy-load transport and positioned using a specialized tilting device.
