The vessel Sounion is currently anchored just south of the Suez Canal in Egypt, where an offloading operation is underway with the assistance of the tug Aigaion Pelagos and the tanker Delta Blue. The oil being removed from Sounion will be transferred to the Delta Blue, which was previously targeted in four separate attacks by the Houthis in early August. Despite these challenges, the operation is progressing smoothly.
It is estimated that approximately 150,000 tonnes of crude oil still remain in Sounion’s cargo tanks. Egyptian shipping ministry officials anticipate that the removal process will take between three to four weeks due to the significant volume of oil involved. This careful and thorough approach is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient transfer of the oil from Sounion to Delta Blue.
The presence of the tug Aigaion Pelagos and tanker Delta Blue highlights the importance of cooperation and coordination in maritime operations. The successful offloading of the oil from Sounion demonstrates the skill and expertise of those involved in the operation. With careful planning and execution, the task of transferring the remaining oil is expected to be completed within the projected timeframe.
