Greece has arrested the captain of an international cruise ship following an incident at the Port of Corfu on July 1. The ship, registered in the Bahamas, was among four vessels docked at the port when strong winds caused the lines securing it to break. At the time, passengers were returning from a day on shore, with the gangway lowered for their reboarding.

As the lines snapped, the gangway shifted, resulting in a 56-year-old female passenger from New Zealand losing her balance and falling into the water. Quick action from the crew and dockworkers allowed them to rescue her, though she sustained minor injuries to her face and body. She was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The 56-year-old Italian captain has been taken into custody as authorities initiate an investigation into the incident. He faces charges under the Hellenic Penal Code for allegedly exposing the passenger to life-threatening danger and neglecting his duty of care.

Despite the incident, the cruise ship was able to proceed with its voyage while the Central Port Authority of Corfu conducts its investigation.
