A Cyprus-flagged container ship sustained severe engine room damage following an Iranian attack in the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicate that one civilian crew member is currently missing. The incident occurred while the vessel was navigating near Oman’s coastline, prompting the crew to abandon the burning ship.
According to US Central Command, the attack resulted in significant damage to the ship’s engine room. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, which operates under the British military, confirmed that the ship was following a route close to the Omani shoreline. This path is commonly used by vessels seeking to avoid Iranian territorial waters while entering and exiting the Persian Gulf.
The crew’s decision to abandon the ship came as it was engulfed in flames, highlighting the dangerous situation they faced. The attack underscores ongoing tensions in the region, particularly concerning maritime security in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
The U.S. military attributed the fire to an attack by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the Cyprus-flagged vessel, GFS Galaxy. One crew member is currently reported missing. The 300-meter-long ship is unable to proceed with its journey due to extensive damage to its engine room caused by the fire.
The IRGC has claimed that they fired warning shots at vessels in the strait, asserting that the targeted ship posed a threat to maritime security. They alleged that multiple ships were attempting to navigate an unauthorized route and disregarded requests to alter their course. Consequently, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until further notice, pending the conclusion of U.S. interventions in the area.
The incident raises concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in areas prone to conflict. As investigations continue, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures in the Strait of Hormuz.
