The body of a Filipino crew member, Gerfe Cadelina, was discovered in his cabin on the Pacific Basin bulker, Silver Lake, while she was docked at Teesport in the UK. The 38-year-old electrician was found with a rope around his neck, leading to suspicions of suicide. Despite no signs of struggle or other injuries, Cadelina’s family believes there may have been other factors at play, possibly work-related.
Cadelina’s wife, Erah, expressed disbelief at the idea of her husband committing suicide, citing his serious plans for their family. No suicide note was found in his possession or cabin, and Erah mentioned that he had not shown any signs of distress during their last conversation on 27 June. The seafarer, who had been working on vessels for eight years, was planning to request leave to be present for the birth of his fourth child in November.
The Hong Kong-based shipping company, Pacific Basin, extended their deepest sympathies to Cadelina’s family and colleagues. They assured full support during this difficult time and stated that all appropriate authorities, including the vessel’s flag state, were promptly notified. The vessel, Silver Lake, departed Teesport on 2 July according to AIS data, with no destination port indicated.
