Attack on UAE Tankers in Iran Results in Indian Casualties

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that 30 Indian nationals are part of the crew on two vessels, which together have a total of 46 crew members. On the MT Al Bahiyah, one Indian crew member tragically lost his life, while another sustained injuries. Meanwhile, on MT Mombasa, nine out of 18 Indian crew members were injured, with two in serious condition.

India’s diplomatic mission in the UAE is actively monitoring the situation and collaborating with local authorities to assist the affected seafarers. In response to the attacks, the Deputy Chief of Mission from the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi was summoned to express India’s strong protest. The Indian government condemned the violence against seafarers and called for an immediate halt to hostilities, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy in the region.

The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that the two national tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while navigating the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz. The missile attack resulted in one Indian crew member’s death and injuries to eight others, including serious injuries to four individuals. The injured crew comprises six Indians and two Ukrainians.

Following the missile strikes, fires broke out on both tankers, but they have since been controlled. The UAE condemned the attack as a violation of international law, emphasizing that it poses a threat to regional security. The ministry asserted the UAE’s right to respond to such escalations and to take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and security, while urging the public to rely on official information sources.
