Unifeeder Group, a part of DP World Marine Services, has made a long-term charter agreement to add two methanol-powered container feeder vessels to its fleet by 2026. The ships, totaling 1250 TEU, were acquired through partnerships with German shipping group Elbdeich Reederei and Norwegian shipping company MPC Container Ships. This investment supports Unifeeder’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting fuel efficiency and the use of biofuels in traditional vessels.
The company is working with industry partners to address the renewable methanol supply issue, aiming to establish production at a scale that can replace traditional fossil fuels in the industry. Parent company DP World Marine Services has also set a target to source 5% of its marine electricity from zero-emission fuels by 2030. Unifeeder CEO Jesper Kristensen sees the investment as a significant step towards an environmentally friendly transformation of the fleet and operations, with the ships set to enter service in the next two years.
Unifeeder Group has set ambitious decarbonization targets, aiming to reduce emissions by 25% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050 through fuel-efficient practices, maintenance and retrofitting of existing vessels, and sharing effective carbon reduction strategies across markets. These efforts reflect the company’s commitment to sustainable solutions and environmental responsibility.
