CIMAC has recently published a new guideline titled “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – ISO 6583:2024: Methanol as a Fuel for Marine Applications – General Requirements and Specifications.” This guideline aims to provide clarity on the use of methanol as a marine fuel, following the release of the first standard for methanol in marine applications in November 2024. The document addresses 32 common questions across six sections, offering valuable insights for industry professionals.

The CIMAC Working Group 7 Fuels, led by Julia Svensson from MAN Energy Solutions, played a key role in developing this FAQ document. The group consists of industry experts from CIMAC and ISO working groups, working together to address the challenges and complexities of using methanol as a fuel in the marine industry. Svensson emphasized the importance of providing clear answers and explanations, particularly regarding methanol impurities, water content, and the different grades of methanol available.

CIMAC is a global non-profit association dedicated to promoting the advancement of ship propulsion, train drive, and power generation technologies. The association comprises national member associations and corporate members from America, Asia, and Europe. The CIMAC WG 7 Fuels, specifically focused on marine fuels, aims to provide recommendations and tools for the industry to ensure safe and efficient operation of diesel engines.
