In a speech to delegates at the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots (IOMMP), Nautilus International general secretary Mark Dickinson urged western nations to revitalize their maritime industries and prioritize the safety of seafarers and seaborne trade. Addressing the theme of safer maritime workplaces on the international Day of the Seafarer, Dickinson emphasized the need for more than just safety tips, calling for proactive measures to protect seafarers, especially in unstable situations like the Red Sea.
Dickinson highlighted the importance of governments coordinating efforts to protect seafarers, with shipping companies and flag states playing a crucial role in ensuring the safety of maritime professionals. He also emphasized the need for countries to invest in their domestic maritime industries in order to provide attractive job opportunities for seafarers. Dickinson pointed out the risks of relying on foreign shipping and stressed the importance of maintaining a strong national fleet for security purposes.
Looking towards the future, Dickinson urged NATO to play a more active role in promoting domestic shipping among member states to ensure collective security. He proposed that NATO, in its 75th year, lead a transformation in shipping to reduce reliance on foreign vessels, boost maritime skills, grow national fleets, and reenergize shipbuilding industries. Dickinson warned of the dangers of neglecting the maritime sector, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to safeguard the industry and enhance global security.
