Class Approved Nuclear-Powered Ships Face Regulatory Hurdles
Since June 2026, three approvals in principle have been granted for nuclear-powered vessels, including a Korean container ship with molten salt reactors. However, these approvals do not indicate imminent ship construction or operations. They highlight a significant gap in outdated safety codes and regulatory challenges, as projects remain purely conceptual.
