The International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) has unveiled an updated version of its Global Maritime Professional Body of Knowledge, enhancing the framework that maritime universities utilize to create and assess training programs. This 2026 edition outlines the essential knowledge, skills, attitudes, and learning outcomes that IAMU advocates for the development of maritime professionals. It serves as a resource for member universities and other maritime education and training organizations.
IAMU operates as a worldwide network of maritime institutions, with the initial version of the framework released in 2019. This earlier edition aligned its outcomes with the competencies outlined in the STCW Convention. In 2023, a review committee was formed to revise the framework, reflecting the rapid technological advancements within the shipping industry. The committee comprises academics from various institutions, including Dalian Maritime University and Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
While the revised framework does not introduce new STCW requirements, it aims to provide a standardized reference for universities as they modernize maritime courses and prepare future professionals in both seafaring and shore-based roles. This initiative underscores IAMU’s commitment to advancing maritime education in line with industry developments.
