The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) plans to enhance its monitoring framework to include all Indian seafarers, irrespective of their vessel’s flag. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced this initiative, aiming to improve safety, regulatory oversight, and support for Indian maritime professionals globally, ensuring compliance with international labor standards.
India, with a coastline of 7,516.6 km and over 200 ports, ranks as the 16th largest maritime nation. Despite its potential, it faces challenges like reliance on foreign vessels and limited financial support. Initiatives like the ₹25,000 crore Maritime Development Fund aim to revitalize the sector, yet access to affordable financing remains a hurdle.
India has seen a remarkable growth in the number of women seafarers, with a 514% increase from 2014 to 2023. The country now boasts 10,440 female Indian seafarers, showcasing its potential in the maritime sector. India plays a crucial role in educating and training individuals for various maritime careers and skills.
