This summer, the number of shadow-fleet vessels transporting Russian oil and LNG through the Northern Sea Route has surged dramatically. Analysis indicates that during the first two months of the 2026 navigation season, more sanctioned oil tankers and LNG carriers were observed than in all of 2025, raising significant safety concerns.
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has identified 200,000m³ LNG carriers as a promising option for the global LNG fleet renewal. Their analysis shows that these larger vessels can increase cargo capacity and reduce transportation costs, with minimal disruption to existing terminals. The findings were presented in LR Advisory’s report at Gastech 2026.
Lloyd’s Register has granted Design Appraisal to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for its pioneering fore-accommodation LNG carrier design, incorporating Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ Wind Challenger hard-sail system. This appraisal confirms compliance with LR’s Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems standards, marking a significant step towards sustainable LNG transportation solutions. Key partners include HHI, MOL, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, BAR Technologies, and the Liberian Registry have partnered to explore large wing sails for LNG carriers, formalizing their initiative at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok. The project aims to integrate BAR’s WindWings system into a new 174,000 cubic-meter LNG carrier, enhancing efficiency and supporting emissions reductions.
At Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Lloyd’s Register partnered with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to advance LNG carrier designs featuring hybrid electric propulsion. They signed an Approval in Principle for a 185,000 cbm LNG carrier, focusing on safety, system architecture, and battery integration for sustainable maritime solutions.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has merged six ship management companies into MOL Global Ship Management Pte. Ltd., managing over 200 vessels under a unified safety framework. This centralization enhances operational efficiency and allows for quicker implementation of safety measures, addressing increasing geopolitical risks and environmental regulations while promoting a cohesive safety culture.
ADNOC’s shipping division has invested $2.7 billion this year, enhancing the UAE’s energy export capabilities amid rising international demand. This includes the acquisition of two LNG carriers for $444 million, scheduled for delivery in 2029. The fleet expansion underscores strategic positioning, particularly in light of supply chain challenges.
On August 24, traffic in the Strait of Hormuz plummeted to just two tankers, the lowest since May. This significant drop highlights the increasing tensions in the region, as Iran implements stricter navigation regulations and blacklists vessels. Oil flows also saw a decline, remaining far below pre-conflict levels.
Over the past week, two oil tankers navigated the Strait of Hormuz, while a liquefied natural gas carrier loaded in the UAE, indicating unusual activity amid limited traffic. Ongoing tensions from the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran continue to disrupt oil and LNG flows, despite some tankers departing the Gulf.
Daphne Technology and Maran Gas have successfully piloted the SlipPure™ Plasma-Catalytic Methane Slip Aftertreatment system on the LNG carrier Maran Gas Chios. This innovative technology reduced methane slip by up to 4 ± 2 g/kWh, marking a significant advancement in addressing emissions from dual-fuel marine engines and supporting maritime decarbonization efforts.
This week, maritime sector unveiled initiatives aimed at improving seafarer welfare, improvements in Seafarers happiness and significant innovations, including the Matangi, an autonomous vessel under the Sagarmala Project, and advanced AI technologies at Vizhinjam International Port. Addionally, pioneering eco-friendly technologies highlight the industry’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) recently released a report on the potential use of advanced nuclear technology in maritime applications. The report suggests that installing this technology on LNG carriers could enable faster transit speeds while operating with zero emissions. ABS conducted a study in collaboration with Herbert Engineering Corporation.
