At Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Lloyd’s Register (LR) partnered with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to advance LNG carrier designs featuring hybrid electric propulsion. The collaboration culminated in the signing of an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a 185,000 cbm LNG carrier.
The AiP focuses on developing and verifying the safety of the hybrid electric propulsion system. Key areas of emphasis include enhancing system architecture, redundancy strategies, and battery integration. This initiative aims to establish guidance and technical requirements for this emerging technology, promoting broader adoption in the LNG carrier sector.
LR’s early involvement is crucial, as it will aid in developing technical guidelines in a field where formal standards are still being established. This positions LR to better support future projects that incorporate electric propulsion systems and low-carbon vessel concepts.
