In the 2023 global port rankings, Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) placed 20th with an index of 62.29 and 19th in Container Port Performance. Moving up from 122nd in 2022, VPA aims for 90 MTPA of cargo this year. May 2024 saw a record throughput of 8,582,000 tons from 221 vessels, surpassing previous peaks.

Deendayal port led in cargo volume, followed by Paradip and Visakhapatnam ports. Visakhapatnam saw a growth of 22.05%, with Chennai, Cochin, and Mumbai ports following. In May 2024, various ports experienced cargo growth, while Kolkata, Kamarajar, and Mormugao ports faced declines in handling.
In bulk cargo, the port set a new record by handling 2,235,891 tonnes from 48 vessels, surpassing the previous record. Liquid cargo saw 1,427,223 tonnes of crude oil from 13 tankers, surpassing the March 2024 record. Container trade achieved a throughput of 70,539 TEU, beating the August 2023 record.
The port achieved a new milestone by surpassing its previous record of 73.75 MMT in fiscal year 2023-24 almost a month before the end of the year. The VPA chairman commended the staff for their hard work and expressed hope for a record 80 MMT in the current financial year.
Dr. Angamuthu VPA unveiled plans for Vizag’s development and infrastructure projects worth Rs. 300 crores with NHAI. VPA aims for closer collaboration with the state government and emphasizes the importance of green port initiatives for a sustainable future. The Chairman also highlighted the 90th Foundation Year celebrations coinciding with the 75th Republic Day.
The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has added green electricity-powered vehicles to its port fleet, including two CNG buses and two heavy truck road sweepers. This initiative is part of the Green Port initiatives to enhance environmental standards and support the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign.
